Ron Diamond, Bill Smith and I are about 70 man-hours into the upgrade of 21D’s interior. We completed the tear-out, and last night we finished the seats. They look GREAT! They aren’t perfect, but they are darn close. Additional thanks to Jon Gillam for repairing and painting the plastic trim pieces, and for lending a hand through some of the seat cover stretching.
Ron and I completed the tear-out on Thursday evening, then Ron, Bill and I started in on the seats early Friday morning. We stripped them down to the bare frames and had to “re-sling” them, which involves cutting and gluing a heavy fabric support to the frames. That process was completed on Friday, along with attaching the new foam to all four of the seat backs. On Saturday we applied the rest of the new foam cushioning and stretched the new leather into place (not a trivial task). The Airtex materials are top-notch and look great. We applied new backer foam and new leather to the skirt trim for the front seats (not shown in the pictures) and reassembled them. The seats are ready to install!
Today (Sunday) we will start in on the side panels, and if all goes as planned, tomorrow we will do the install. We are hoping to have her back on line on Monday evening.
I’ll post an update when we are finished, but for now, here are some pictures of our progress. Thanks for your patience during this long-awaited and much needed upgrade of our Cutlass!!
Looking good! Great job
