About Us

Sky-Vu Flyers strives to adhere to our Mission, Vision and Core Values:

Sky-Vu Aircraft

Sky-Vu Flyers owns and operates five aircraft; three Cessna singles and two Cirrus SR2x.  There are no financial liens on any of these aircraft and the club maintains fully-funded cash reserves* for engine and propeller overhauls, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. All of the aircraft are hangared year round, and they are all equipped with engine block heaters for easy starts during cold weather.

*Occasionally we will temporarily “borrow” from our reserves for an aircraft purchase rather than obtaining a bank loan.

Modern Avionics

We currently have three airplanes in the Sky-Vu fleet that qualify as “Technically Advanced Aircraft” (TAA) per the FAA definition.

  • N721ZA is our Cessna 182T with IFR-certified Garmin G1000 avionics.
  • N716CD is our Cirrus SR22-G1 is equipped with an Aspen PFD 1000 Pro Max Plus and an Avidyne FlightMax EX5000 MFD.
  • N969PG is our Cirrus SR20-G3 and is equipped with the Avidyne Entegra EX5000C PFD and MFD.

The Garmin G1000 avionics package in N721ZA includes integrated GPS navigation. The other four Sky-Vu aircraft are IFR-certified and are equipped with Garmin GTN 650 Hi-resolution touch screen GPS units that are WAAS enabled. Our Cirrus aircraft are also equipped with Garmin GNS 4×0 backup navigators (GNS 430 in N716CD, and GNS 420 in N969PG).

Sky-Vu is committed to keeping the avionics in our fleet as similar as feasibly possible, and we consider it an important safety feature to have that kind of continuity across the panels.

ADS-B and GPS Upgrades Complete!!

In mid-2016, the board began looking at upgrade options to comply with the FAA’s ADS-B Out mandate that went into effect in January of 2020. In November of 2016, the club voted to install Garmin GTX 345 transponders in all 4 Cessna aircraft (the GTX 345R version in N721ZA, compatible with the G1000 avionics). These transponders provide ADS-B Out functionality to satisfy the FAA mandate. They also provide ADS-B In functionality, sending TIS-B and FIS-B traffic and weather data to the panel-mounted GPS system. They also send the traffic, weather and backup AHRS data wirelessly via Bluetooth to the pilot’s iPad running ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot.

In addition to the transponder upgrades, the club voted to upgrade the Garmin GNS 430W GPS units in our 172SP, 172RG, and 182S aircraft to Garmin GTN 650 high-resolution touch screen GPS systems. These upgrades were completed (for all of the Cessna aircraft) in the 1st quarter of 2017, on schedule and on budget. Similar upgrades (Garmin GTX 345 transponder GTN 650 GPS) were accomplished in the Cirrus SR22 in January of 2018. Our newest aircraft, N969PG has also been upgraded with a Garmin GTN 650 and GTX 345. All of these upgrades were paid for with club funds designated for equipment upgrades with no special assessments to the membership.

EFIS Upgrades!

Sky-Vu has also placed a high priority on the elimination of failure-prone vacuum systems from our aircraft in favor of more modern and reliable Electronic Flight Information Systems (EFIS). As of this writing 4 of our aircraft are void of engine-driven vacuum systems; N5168V and N182SV have recently been upgraded with Garmin G5 EFIS units in place of their gyroscopic attitude indicators, and their vacuum systems were removed. N716CD has been equipped with an Aspen PFD 1000 Pro Max Plus EFIS system with synthetic vision, and its backup attitude indicator is electrically powered (no vacuum system). While N721ZA (G1000) still has a vacuum system on board, that vacuum system only drives the backup attitude indicator which is not IFR-critical. The G1000 avionics in N721ZA and the Avidyne glass panel avionics in N969PG both have an integrated electronic Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for primary use. N969PG uses electrically-powered gyros in the backup attitude indicator. Therefore, we have no aircraft remaining in our fleet with an IFR-critical vacuum system!
